Why buy new and emission-heavy watches when old fashioned watches are cheaper and so much classier? How about going for an old school pocket watch? A classic pocket watch is a thing of beauty. And while it may appear a bit affected to carry one around with you, there have been a lot greater fashion crimes. The only thing is you may get nervous about losing it, particularly if it is antique, so a chain is recommended. But then chains do not go well with jeans and t shirt. The only option really is a waistcoat, but then you start to look like Mr Toad.
As collectors items they are things of beauty. There are two styles of pocket watch, the hunter and the half hunter. With the half hunter you are able to read the time with the case still closed thanks to a discrete window, whilst the dial of the former type of pocket watch is normally fully covered by its case.
If you really must buy a new pocket watch it is possible to buy a Sekonda pocket watch for something like $50 but this will be made with a quartz movement and if you are going to opt for such a deliciously retro timepiece it would be crazy not to go old school mechanical. Tissot now has a large range of models that includes an extremely handsome skeleton model with a gold-plated brass case that comes in at around the $800 mark.
But the greenest option, and the classiest is to hunt down an old fashioned, still working antique watch. It will probably outlast all the new ones on the market today!
